The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) received a delegation of businessmen from India interested to invest in non-ferrous metal processing and mining in Zambia. The delegation which comprised of three private companies based in New Delhi singled out recycling of electronic waste and mining as their key areas of interest.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mr. Pramod Chandra, who is Managing Director of Tecop India PVT limited, one of the participating companies, explained that the three companies were specialized in non-ferrous metals which processes scrap metal to produce good quality items. The processed products include electrical, hardware and copper rods which are also produced from scrap metal. Mr. Chandra said the three companies had 40 to 50 years work experience in non-ferrous metals processing and were looking to invest about US$5 million in Zambia. He observed that electronic waste was currently not being re-cycled in Zambia.
“Our investment would be a win-win situation as it will help Zambia to recycle electronic waste, which is currently not being addressed, while our company would create wealth which would also contribute to job creation in Zambia.” Mr. Chandra said.
Mrs. Jessica Chombo, who was representing the ZDA DG Mr. Albert Halwampa, assured the delegation of ZDA support and facilitation in their investment journey into the Zambian market. She noted that e-waste management was an important issue given the use of electronic equipment in the country that eventually wore out and hence required safe disposal.
Mr. Chandra expressed happiness at the manner ZDA handled the delegation saying it gave them confidence that their mission to Zambia would be fruitful and beneficial to both parties.
