The long dormant Mulungushi Textile Factory in Kabwe is finally set to resume full operations next month, nearly 20 years after it closed and just ten months after the installation of new state of the art machinery worth about US$140 million.
Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga, confirmed that President Hakainde Hichilema will soon commission the revived plant following a successful test run of the equipment.
Mr. Mulenga said the factory—now equipped with modern, AI powered production systems—will begin manufacturing uniforms and a range of textile products locally. The plant is expected to create between 400 and 500 jobs, providing a significant economic boost to Kabwe and the surrounding areas.
He further disclosed that full printing tests will begin within the next two weeks, starting with the production of the Zambian national flag and the Coat of Arms.
The minister emphasised government’s commitment to ensuring that young Zambians are prioritised for employment and skills development at the facility.
The minister made the remarks after witnessing the machinery test run in Kabwe yesterday.
Meanwhile, Central Province Permanent Secretary Milner Mwanakampwe said the reopening of Mulungushi Textiles is aligned with the province’s broader strategy to position itself as a leading industrial hub.
Mulungushi Textiles General Manager Emmanuel Sementi also confirmed that all obsolete machinery has been removed and that the factory is ready to commence full colour production.
